Intent
We believe that Design and Technology is an important subject with significant relevance to modern life. Through studying Design and Technology, children will develop a broad range of knowledge, skills, and understanding that prompts engagement in a wide variety of activities. Pupils will design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts.
Implementation
In Early Years children develop a broad range of skills. Expressive Art and Design is particularly relevant to Design and Technology. You can see via the link below how the experiences in this area of learning, as well as a focus on developing the characteristics of effective learning, provide a foundation for studying Design and Technology in key stages 1 and 2.
In Key Stages 1 and 2, DT is taught in in 2 day blocks each term and where possible it is linked to themes that are being studied in other areas of the curriculum. We use the Design and Technology Association 'Projects on a Page' and our 2 year plan ensures progression in each of the areas - designing, making, evaluating and the technical knowledge required to make things work. This plan also covers the National Curriculum requirements for cooking and nutrition covering both where food comes from and its preparation, cooking and nutrition.
